VGLI Frequently Asked Questions
What is VGLI?
Veterans’ Group Life Insurance is renewable term life insurance that can allow eligible former Service Members to continue life insurance coverage after SGLI.
How long do I have to apply?
VA says eligible Veterans generally must apply within 1 year and 120 days after leaving the military.
Do I need a medical exam?
If you apply for VGLI within 240 days of separation, VA says you do not need to prove good health. After that period, health information is required.
How much VGLI can I get?
VGLI is available from $10,000 to $500,000, subject to rules based on your prior SGLI coverage.
Do VGLI premiums increase?
Yes. VGLI rates are based on age and coverage amount and adjust by five-year age brackets.
Are smokers charged more for VGLI?
No. VA states VGLI premium rates are the same for smokers and non-smokers.
Can private insurance be cheaper?
Sometimes, particularly for healthy applicants who qualify for favorable underwriting. Private pricing varies by age, health, tobacco use, term, coverage amount, carrier and state.
Should I cancel VGLI after getting a quote?
No. A quote is not coverage. Never cancel or reduce existing coverage until replacement insurance is approved, issued, in force and acceptable to you.
VGLI facts should be verified with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
